When assessing whether a teen's irritability and emotion dysregulation are atypical and might necessitate treatment, key signs include the severity, frequency, and impact of these behaviors on daily functioning. Signs that mean they require more evaluation might include when irritability significantly impairs their social interactions, such as leading to consistent difficulties in forming or maintaining friendships, or when family accommodation of the teen's anxiety behaviors (meant to help with stress) instead perpetuates or exacerbates social and emotional challenges.
